Two years ago, at the age of 17, after a tough start to life and experiencing the care system, I decided it was time to focus on myself and make a positive change for my future.
This is where Carney’s Community played an important role in helping me turn things around and find employment. I got a job with the social enterprise “Feel Good Bakery” as a Barista. I worked there for just over a year, winning employee of the month twice, and delivered training on customer services. I love talking to and meeting new people, so this role was a perfect fit for me.
While employed at “Feel Good Bakery” I was also volunteering at Carney’s Community, helping with the food care program and assisting with charity fundraising dinners.
Alongside this, I was also involved in CLICK (Children Living in Care Kouncil). CLICK is a group of young people between the ages of 13-18 who speak up on behalf of other children in care under Wandsworth Council to help positively impact the decision-making and shape the services that they and other children receive. I attended regular meetings and I also assisted with interviews for staff working in the care system. It is very important to me to be part of making a positive change and helping support others where I can.
At the beginning of this year, I joined Diversity Media Sales as part of their DMS Champions Initiative which supports getting young people into work. It has been an amazing experience so far and I have thrown myself into this opportunity, meeting new people, learning about the world of media, and picking up new skills. And although I can make a very good cup of coffee, I have managed to avoid the tea round so far!

“One of the biggest challenges we face, as a charity trying to support disadvantaged young people, is finding real employment opportunities for them. So for Cyprian to be offered a full-time job at Diversity Media Sales is huge. However, it is also a huge opportunity for them, as I have no doubt Cyprian will make the most of his role and be an asset to the company.”
Moving forward, I want to continue developing my skills and gain experience within the social influencer area, where I can use my own lived experiences to help make positive changes to areas such as children in care, social services, and, housing.
Adversities can happen to the best of us, but we don’t have to let our past determine our future.
